Panel 13 - A palace or city with the gate wide open
An ambiguous panel. It appears to show a richly decorated fortified city or palace, surrounded by a moat, with the gates wide open and the drawbridge down. It's meaning here is not clear; it could be here simply to show that the mass executions in the following two panels are conducted extra muros, as befitted common criminals. Alternatively, if the designer was following Theotinus' vita of St Margaret's closely, this could represent God's promise to the saint at this point in the narrative that the 'gates of Heaven' were already open to her.
