Panel 01 - Potiphar has Joseph imprisoned
Description:
Imprisonment scenes are one of the most common topoi of narrative glass and are normally reduced to a very simple formula - a warder brandishing a weapon to drive the cowering prisoner into an open doorway (there are numerous examples on this website, mostly in hagiographic windows). This panel, as is typical at Rouen is far richer and more nuanced. Potiphar seems to fiddle uncomfortably with his cloak (contrast with his confident pose in panel 06), the warders look at him quizically and Joseph steps freely into the prison as if anticipating the favour he will find amongst his guards and fellow prisoners (see Gen 39:21-23).
